Art Hop 2010, ABC= Art Builds Community!

SEE YOU AT ART HOP THIS SATURDAY!

If you are a vendor interested in participating in Art Hop come on down Saturday morning around 9:15 am and sign up the day of the event at the vendor check-in table at 20th and Alberta. Any remaining vendor spaces will be first come first serve.

Art Hop is Art on Alberta’s (AoA) day-long celebration held each May.To get the full scoop on Art Hop check out our download-able press kit HERE.

For Art Hop 2010, we will create four new permanent murals for NE Alberta Street.  Muralist Rodolfo Serna will lead local youth groups from House of Umoja, p:ear, and Girls, Inc. to design and paint three murals which will ultimately be located on the buildings of Sabin CDC, Cork Wine Shop, and House of Umoja.  A fourth mural, designed by Esteban Camacho, will be open for anyone attending Art Hop to paint, and will be later placed on the facade of the Community Energy Project.  All murals will be painted at street level and mounted later to the buildings with the help of another NE Alberta Street nonprofit organization, Oregon Tradeswomen.

Binks, Siren Nation, Bitch Media, Radio Room & Destination DIY are sponsoring stages with ongoing events throughout the day. A program is available detailing where and when everything is on our homepage. You can also look for the program in this week’s Portland Mercury.

A special exhibit of the original works used to create “Art in Hand- The Portland Project,” a deck of unique playing cards designed by 54 local artists will be on display during Art Hop and decks will be available for sale.

Art on Alberta’s 11th Annual Art Hop is supported in part by a grant from the Oregon Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency; with additional support from generous sponsors.

As part of the promotion this year, Art on Alberta will be advertising on the back of one TriMet bus. To get
the community more involved, Art on Alberta is hosting a contest from April 1st until May 15th. Spot the
Art Hop ad
on the back of the trimet bus, snap a photo and email it to: info@artonalberta.org. A winner will be selected from the best submissions and awarded a prize on Art Hop day.

After the event, AoA hopes to produce a printed directory of all public art on NE Alberta Street that will be offered for free at member businesses. The production of the directory will depend on future grants and donations.

Our theme for Art Hop 2010 is “ABC: Art Builds Community” and each mural will pertain to a different aspect of the NE Alberta neighborhood – from historical topics to current civic themes such as bike safety, youth, education – reflecting the multicultural and multifaceted makeup of this popular NE Portland neighborhood. These themes are in keeping with our mission statement: to promote the Alberta Art District’s distinct cultural identity through art and educational activities.

Art Hop 2010 will strive to be educational for people of all ages to learn about how murals are made through observation and hands-on participation. The directory of public art produced after our event will serve as a self-guided tour where people can continue to learn about art on NE Alberta Street.

The all volunteer board of Art on Alberta is excited to bring this year’s Art Hop to life, but we couldn’t do it without you! We are actively looking for members, volunteers, vendors, sponsors and general operating donations.
